Identity and Environment in a Multiethnic Context

Book on the Ulwa People from the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua.

This volume, The Ulwa People - Identity and Environment in a Multiethnic Context, is dedicated to the Ulwa people, one of the indigenous peoples of the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua. The majority of this people, part of the Sumu-Mayangna family, live in the community of Karawala in the municipality of Desembocadura de Rio Grande, in the South Atlantic Autonomous Region (RAAS) of Nicaragua's Carribean Coast region.

The book is based on the results of the Cultural Revitalization, Environment and Productive Systems project, a programme of collaborative research between the University of the Autonomous Regions of the Carribean Coast of Nicaragua (URACCAN), and the University of Tromsø, Norway, with financial support from the Norwegian Council for Higher Education's Program for Development Research and Education (NUFU) (2001-2007). It brings together the main pieces of research conducted by students and staff of URACCAN who held scholarships under the project, as well as some work by specialists on the central themes. The fourteen articles in the book present themes from the life of the Ulwa people in their multiethnic context: linguistic and cultural revitalization, indigenous cosmovision and knowledge, management of natural resources, traditional medicine and territorial demarcation. In addition, through this book we hear Ulwa young people and adults speaking of their daily life and of their dreams for the future of their people and their community.

The edition is partly bilingual: all the chapter summaries are presented in two languages, Spanish and English, in a separate section. Four of the articles are written in English, the rest in Spanish.
